Hairy vetch

Vicia villosa

Hairy vetch or winter vetch makes an excellent component in overwintering cover crop mixtures. As a legume, it can convert atmospheric nitrogen into plant-available forms and provide free nitrogen to the following crop through the mineralisation process. Hairy vetch can be cultivated on almost all soil types, since it is very undemanding and winter-hardy. It covers the ground very densely and performs well as a preceding crop. Hairy vetch is mainly cultivated as a component of the Landsberger mixture or along with rye for use as forage in the spring.
