Field peas

Pisum sativum

The field pea falls under the legume category and can be used as a forage plant due to its high protein content. As a legume, it is a nitrogen-fixing plant that can convert atmospheric nitrogen into forms that plants can use and make it available to the subsequent crop. There is a summer and a winter variety of the field pea. Compared to summer field peas, the winter variety is characterised by its winter-hardiness, with autumn sowing making an earlier harvest possible. The winter field pea is well suited for mixtures with cereals such as winter rye or triticale.
